5 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers In 2026

You don't need to know how to code to figure out whether your website is helping your business or working against it without you realizing. Most of the warning signs are things you can check yourself in about ten minutes, using nothing but your own phone. You just have to know what to actually look for, because a website can look perfectly fine to the person who built it years ago and still be losing you customers every week.

Here are five signs worth checking today.

1. Your Site Takes Too Long To Load On A Phone

Pull up your website on your phone using cellular data, not your home wifi, and time how long it takes to actually become usable. If it takes more than three or four seconds, you're losing visitors before they see a single word of your content. Most people don't wait. They tap back and try the next result.

Run your homepage through a free tool like Google's PageSpeed Insights. It gives you an actual load time and flags the biggest culprits, which are usually oversized images that were never compressed before being uploaded.

2. Your Contact Form Doesn't Actually Work

This one sounds obvious, but it's shockingly common. Fill out your own contact form right now, submit it, and confirm you actually receive the message. Websites get redesigned, email addresses change, hosting migrates, and somewhere in that process a form quietly stops sending anywhere. Nobody notices because nobody's filling it out except real customers, and real customers don't call to tell you it's broken. They just leave.

3. There's No Clear Next Step Above The Fold

Look at your homepage without scrolling. Is it obvious what someone should do next? Call you? Book something? Request a quote? If a visitor has to scroll and hunt to figure out how to actually contact you, most won't bother. They came with a specific need, and if the path forward isn't immediately visible, they'll assume it doesn't exist.

4. Your Design Quietly Signals The Business Might Be Closed

This is a subtler problem, and it's an emotional one more than a technical one. Outdated fonts, a copyright year from several years ago still sitting in the footer, stock photography that feels dated, or a layout that looks like it hasn't been touched since your business first opened, all of it sends a quiet signal to a new visitor that you might not still be operating. They won't say that out loud. They'll just move on to a competitor whose site looks current, because a current-looking site feels like proof the business is still active and paying attention.

A visitor deciding whether to trust you has almost nothing to go on except what they see in the first few seconds. An outdated design is doing quiet damage even when everything on the site technically still works.

5. You Don't Show Up When You Search Your Own Business Name

Open an incognito browser window and search your exact business name. If your website doesn't appear clearly in the first result, or if outdated information, an old address, or a competitor shows up instead, that's a real problem. This is the search someone runs when they already know about you, maybe from a referral or a sign they drove past, and it should be the easiest search in the world for your business to win.

If it isn't, something in how your site is set up, or how your Google Business Profile is configured, is actively working against you.

None of these five signs require a redesign to check. They require ten honest minutes and a willingness to look at your own website the way a stranger would. Most business owners haven't done that in years, simply because there's no reason to unless something prompts it.
