What A Real Website Audit Actually Checks (Most Checklists Miss This)

Most website audit checklists you find online check the same five things, and they've been checking the same five things for years. Core Web Vitals. Meta tags. A generic SEO score. Whether you have an SSL certificate. A mobile-friendly test. All of that is real and worth checking, but it's also the bare minimum, and it misses the issues that actually cost a business leads.

A generic checklist tells you your site technically works. It doesn't tell you whether it's actually converting the people who show up, or whether you're quietly losing them somewhere the checklist never looks.

Here's what we specifically check that most of those lists don't.

Whether A Missed Call Actually Gets A Text Back

If your business runs on phone calls, and most service businesses do, an audit that never looks at what happens after an unanswered call is missing the single biggest leak most owners have. We covered this in more depth in a separate piece, but the short version is that 62% of small business calls go unanswered, and 85% of the people who reach voicemail instead of a person never call back. A real audit checks whether your business has any system in place to catch that gap, or whether every missed call is just gone.

Exit-Intent Capture

Most visitors who leave your website without contacting you were never going to convert on that visit anyway, no matter how good the site is. But some percentage of them were close, and left because of a small hesitation, a question they didn't see answered, or simply because they got distracted. Exit-intent capture, a prompt that appears the moment someone's about to leave, catches some of those visitors before they're gone entirely. A generic checklist has no concept of this. It only checks whether the page loaded.

Most audits stop at whether the page loads. This is where the real leaks usually are.

Real PageSpeed Data, Not Just A Score

A lot of tools hand you a single speed score out of 100 and call it done. That number alone doesn't tell you much. What actually matters is the real load time a visitor experiences on a mobile connection, which specific assets are slowing things down, and whether the slowness is happening on the page someone actually lands on from a search, not just your homepage. We pull that data directly rather than reporting a score that sounds official but doesn't point you toward a fix.

Broken Internal Links

Every website accumulates broken links over time. A page gets renamed. A blog post gets removed. A service you no longer offer still has a page linking to it from three other places. Individually these seem minor. Collectively they confuse both visitors and Google, and they're one of the easiest things to fix once you actually know they exist, which most owners don't, because nothing about a broken link is visible unless you specifically go looking for it.

Security Headers

This one sounds technical, and it partly is, but it matters more than it sounds like it should. Missing security headers can trigger browser warnings, hurt how your site is perceived by both visitors and search engines, and in some cases leave real vulnerabilities exposed. A generic SEO checklist almost never checks this layer at all, because it's not really an SEO issue. It's a trust and security issue that happens to also affect how your site performs.

A missed call system alone can be the difference between recovering a portion of an estimated $126,000 in average annual lost revenue, or letting that number stay exactly where it is. That's what a checklist that only checks meta tags will never catch.

An audit that only tells you what's technically correct isn't actually an audit of your business. It's an audit of your code.

The goal of a real audit isn't to hand you a score. It's to tell you specifically what's costing you customers right now, in language that doesn't require a developer to interpret, and with enough detail that you can actually act on it.
