Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up On Google (We Went Through This Ourselves)

I'll just say it plainly. We ran into real trouble getting our own Google Business Profile verified. We submitted the video verification six or seven times. Every one came back rejected, with no specific reason attached beyond a generic denial. Eventually we escalated it to Google's own community forum, where a small army of business owners in the exact same position were comparing notes on a process none of them fully controlled.

We're writing this from firsthand experience with exactly what that process puts you through. If you're searching for your own business right now and not finding it, or finding it buried past the map pack, there's a real chance you're stuck in some version of what we went through.

What Verification Actually Requires (And Why It Fails So Often)

Google's video verification asks you to film a short walkthrough of your business, showing signage, the interior, and sometimes specific angles that confirm the location matches what's listed on the profile. It sounds simple. In practice, a huge number of legitimate businesses get rejected on the first attempt, and often the second, with almost no explanation of what specifically failed.

Google doesn't publish a clear reason for most video verification rejections. Businesses are left guessing whether it was lighting, framing, a mismatch between the address on the sign and the profile, or something else entirely.

For service businesses that don't operate out of a traditional storefront, which describes a lot of Tampa contractors, consultants, and agencies like ours, this gets even messier. There's no obvious signage to film. There's no lobby. The business exists, it's real, it pays taxes and has clients, but it doesn't look like the kind of location Google's verification process was built to confirm. That mismatch is exactly what tripped us up.

The Other Two Reasons Businesses Disappear From Search

Verification is the most visible problem, but it's not the only reason a business fails to show up. Two other issues quietly do the same damage, and they're both fixable without any help from Google support.

The first is NAP inconsistency, meaning your business Name, Address, and Phone number don't match exactly across every place they appear online. Your Google profile says one thing. Your website footer says something slightly different, maybe a suite number is missing, or the phone number is formatted with dashes in one place and dots in another. Google's algorithm treats these as signals of uncertainty. When it can't confirm you're the same business everywhere, it hedges by ranking you lower, or not surfacing you at all in local results.

The second is a lack of supporting citations elsewhere online. Google doesn't just trust what you tell it about your own business. It looks for corroboration, meaning other sites, directories, and platforms that independently list the same business information. A profile with no citations anywhere else looks unverified to the algorithm even before you hit Google's actual verification wall.

Fix your NAP consistency and build a handful of real citations before you even worry about verification. Both are entirely within your control, and both directly affect whether Google trusts what your profile says.

What You Can Actually Do While You're Stuck

Nobody can tell you how to force Google's verification process to move faster, since it's genuinely outside your control once you've escalated it. What you can control is everything around it, and it's more than most business owners realize.

  • โ†’Check that your business name, address, and phone number are written identically on your website, your Google profile, and every directory you're listed on, down to the punctuation
  • โ†’Claim and complete listings on the directories that matter most for your industry, even if they feel minor
  • โ†’Make sure your website has your address and phone number visible somewhere on every page, not just a contact page
  • โ†’Ask a few real customers to mention your business name and location in a review, since that reinforces the location signal Google is trying to confirm
  • โ†’Keep your profile active with real photos and updates, even while verification is pending, since an inactive-looking profile doesn't help your case either way

None of this guarantees a faster verification. It does mean you're not sitting completely helpless while the process plays out, and it fixes real problems that would still be hurting your visibility whether verification is still pending or already resolved.
